Tom Solty

Tom Solty is a painter, illustrator and designer, whose current work addresses human failure and the loneliness of mankind in mostly figurative ways.

He grew up in a small town in the very west of Germany, close to the border of the Netherlands. His early experience in art and creative expression has been formed by the city theatre of Aachen, where he worked as a stage designer and painting assistant for the scenery. During that time he also finished his technical secondary school with a focus on design. Later on, in 2015, he successfully completed his Bachelor’s degree in Illustration at the Academy of Fine Arts in Maastricht, Netherlands. After that he started working at the “Studio Bonn” in Berlin, which is very well known for their Interior design within the fashion scene. His interest in painting with oil and the application of traditional techniques started in 2018, when Tom began his Master of Painting at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Lisbon, Portugal.

His upcoming project contains a solo exhibition in Lisbon with a focus on his recent oil paintings under the guidance of his mentor Margarida Prieto.

Tom Solty about his works:
“Since I started the Master of Painting at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Lisbon, I focused on painting with oil on mostly linen canvas. I'm trying to learn more about the traditional ways of painting and combine contemporary happenings with dated techniques. The paintings I am working on don’t have a specific message, but they can work as a bridge between the sources of endless images inside the Internet and personal experiences, mostly documented through photography done by myself. The reason why I choose the method of oil paint on self-constructed canvas goes back to the simple fact that I want to create something that lasts. Graffiti is temporary and created today, but gone tomorrow. The tattoos that shape my generation will disappear with death and all the images from the Internet are only available on a screen. The tradition of oil paint on a canvas is maybe the only obsolete habit I am using.”
